Teaching Your Dog to Not Jump Up on People

Teaching Your Dog to Not Jump Up on People

Dogs that jump up on people were probably encouraged to do that while they were puppies. However, it isn’t so much fun now that your dog is fully grown. Every time your dog attempts to jump up on you, turn around quickly so he falls to the floor. Once all four feet are on the ground, give him praise and a food treat. Encourage all family members to do the same thing. Enlist the help of some friends or neighbors to reinforce this behavior. Anticipate situations where your dog might jump up and insist that he sit by you. If your dog is sitting, he can’t be jumping up on people. Soon enough your dog will get the message that jumping up is not appropriate behavior. Be patient and kind. Never punish your dog during training since this will just confuse him.
