Teaching Your Dog to Lie Down on Command

Teaching Your Dog to Lie Down on Command1

Teaching your dog to lie down on command gives you a way to put your dog in a submissive position and indicate that it is time to settle down. Your dog will need to obey the SIT command reliably before learning the DOWN command. Start with your dog sitting and get down to his level. Hold a food treat in front of his nose. Move the treat down and out in front of your dog so he’ll have to lower his front end and stretch out to follow it. Say your dog’s name followed by the DOWN command. Once your dog approximates lying down, give him the treat. As you practice require him to get more precise with lying down. Then delay giving him the treat to make sure he stays down. Gradually reduce and eliminate the treat so your dog obeys your command with praise alone. Learn more from your Veterinarian Cherry Hill, NJ.
