Lighting and Your Pet Reptile

When you adopt a reptile you need to consider its lighting and heat needs to provide a proper environment for your pet. Research your specific species of reptiles to determine the proper temperature and humidity for your reptile. Heat lamps provide both light and heat but you need to position them properly to maintain the proper temperature. Check that there are no hot spots that could injure your reptile including making enclosure surfaces or water too hot. Provide a shaded area where your reptile can cool off as needed. Your reptile will need a constant temperature even overnight. Consider purchasing heat lamps that don’t provide light to keep the enclosure warm while allowing darkness for a more natural environment. Handling your pet daily provides an opportunity for socialization and bonding but keep the time outside the enclosure short since it needs its lighting and heat that the enclosure provides.
