Teaching Your Dog to Lie Down on Command

Teaching your dog to lie down on command gives you a way to settle your dog down and indicate that it is time to relax. This command starts with your dog in a sitting position so be sure your dog reliably obeys the SIT command. Once your dog is sitting, hold a treat in front of your dog’s nose. Move it down and out in front of his feet so he needs to stretch into a lying down position to keep following the treat. Say your dog’s name followed by the DOWN command. Once your dog is pretty much lying down, give him the treat and lots of praise. Practice this often and as he becomes more reliable with the DOWN command, delay giving him the treat to ensure compliance. Gradually reduce and then eliminate the treats so your dog lies down with your command and praise alone. For more information, contact your Livonia, MI veterinarian or click here.
