Keeping Your Dog From Jumping Up on People

Most dogs that jump up on people do so because they were encouraged to jump up as puppies. However it’s not so much fun now that your dog is fully grown. Whenever your dog starts to jump up on you, turn around quickly so he falls to the ground. When all four feet are on the ground, give your dog a food treat and lots of praise. Ask that all other household members follow this routine so your dog starts to understand that jumping up gets him nothing. Enlist a few friends to work this training too. Next start anticipating when your dog may be tempted to jump. Insist that he sits by your side. If your dog is sitting by you, he can’t be jumping up on people. Never yell at your dog or punish him while he is learning. For more information, contact your Eagle, ID veterinarian.
