Picking Up Your Cat Properly

Picking Up Your Cat Properly

Your cat is pretty sturdy but you could injure her or make her angry if you pick her up improperly. Before you pick up your cat, make sure she is amenable to being picked up. If your cat is crouched down and hissing with pinned back ears, she probably wants you to leave her alone. A purring kitty who is rubbing against your legs and bumping into you playfully is looking to be picked up. To pick up your cat, place one hand under her chest just behind her front legs. Use the other hand and forearm under her belly to support your cat and keep her horizontal. Never pick us your cat by a limb, the scruff of the neck, her tail or even by the front legs like you would a human child. Handle her gently and take care not to drop your cat.
