Does Your Sugar Glider Have Ick

Sugar gliders can suffer from a syndrome that is recognizable due in large part to the change in the appearance of the hair coat of affected gliders. The condition is referred to as “ick” because the fur takes on an “icky” appearance. Affected gliders may also suffer from poor appetite, diarrhea, oozing from the pouch giving the belly area a sticky feel and resulting in matting of the fur. Without any treatment, sugar gliders can die as a result of anorexia.

The cause of sugar glider ick has not been fully established but it’s suspected that it’s caused by Simplicomonas, a microscopic protozoan parasite. Stress can also play an important role in the development of this disease.

If you notice symptoms of the problem, you should take your pet to your reputed vets Savannah GA for a thorough examination and appropriate veterinary attention.
