Don't Shave Your Cat to Keep Him Cool

There are a few good reasons to shave your cat. It can keep mats at bay and it can eliminate stray hair from settling in your home, but don’t shave your cat because you think it will keep him cool in the summer.

It makes sense that getting rid of all that hair will keep your cat cool, but the opposite is actually true. Cats have an insulating undercoat and a heat-repelling outer coat. The outer coat may get hot, but the insulating coat keeps his skin nice and cool. By shaving him, you take away his ability to regulate his own body temperature.

If you’re worried about your cat overheating, don’t shave him. Instead, buy him a cooling mat or turn on a fan. If you want to learn more, click here, or ask your veterinarian Louisville, CO for advice.
