Testing your Papillon’s Blood Sugar Levels

Testing your Papillon’s Blood Sugar Levels

Has your Papillon been diagnosed with canine diabetes? If so then he may need to have his blood sugar levels tested on a daily basis. If this is the case then your vet may suggest testing your dog’s blood sugar level at home on a handheld meter or device. Many pet owners simply use a handheld glucometer designed for people since it is considerably cheaper than pet glucometers. If your Papillon will not allow you to test his blood then you may have to go in to the vet’s office for frequent testing. Some dog owners will test their dog’s blood by pricking the marginal vein in the ear to obtain a blood sample. A sample can also be taken from your dog’s front paw. Make sure the blood drops onto the strip and then insert the strip as directed on the glucometer. Compare the reading with the most recent reading by your animal hospital Aurora, CO.
