Teaching your dog to stay on command gives you a way to keep your dog in position after another command. The training for this command starts from a sitting position so ensure that your dog reliably obeys the SIT command. Train your dog when he is alert but not overly excited. With your dog in the sitting position, hold your hand in front of his face to indicate stop. Say your dog’s name followed by the STAY command. Take a step or two backwards as long as your dog stays where he is. Call your dog to you and give him a food treat and lots of praise. Practice this often while you increase the time before you give him the treat and the distance between you and your dog. If your dog breaks, just bring him back to the starting position without fuss. Eventually your dog will stay on command. For more information, contact your Cy-Fair veterinarian.
