Feeding Your Parakeet

Feeding Your Parakeet

Since parakeets are often adopted as beginner pets it is easy to believe that you can feed your parakeet seeds and water and you’re good to go. This is not a healthy diet. Seeds are a good start but should only comprise 10 percent of your bird’s diet. The mainstay of your parakeet’s diet should be high-quality parakeet pellets that you can purchase from a reputable pet supply dealer. Green leafy vegetables such as romaine lettuce and spinach provide additional nutrition. Your bird may also enjoy other raw and cooked vegetables. Small pieces of fruit such as apple slices or strawberries make a welcome treat. Ensure that your parakeet has access to a cuttlebone. This product gives your bird the calcium he needs and all that gnawing helps keep the beak trim. Make sure your parakeet has access to fresh, clean water at all times.
