Crate Training and Your Puppy

Crate Training and Your Puppy

Your puppy’s crate makes a comforting lair for him to rest in safety. It is a place to confine your puppy for short periods of time when you can’t supervise him constantly. You can also use the crate to housetrain your puppy. Choose a size that is large enough to fit in comfortably and lie down in comfort. If your dog will spend significant time in the crate, leave room for food and water bowls. Give your dog a soft cushion and some toys to keep him busy. Lure your puppy into the crate using food treats. Leave the door open at first but then close it for short intervals, as your puppy gets comfortable with the crate. When you take your puppy out of the crate, take him outside to eliminate especially upon rising, after meals and just before bedtime. This will reinforce the need to go outside.
