Feeding Your Parakeet

Feeding Your Parakeet

Parakeets are often thought of as beginner pets so it is easy to think that giving your bird some seeds and water and you’re good to go. However, seeds alone don’t meet your parakeet’s nutritional needs. Seeds should only make up about 10% of your bird’s diet. Parakeet Pellets should be the mainstay of his diet. Purchase the pellets from a pet supply store with high turnover so you are sure they are fresh. Give your parakeet green, leafy vegetables such as romaine lettuce or spinach and other crunchy vegetables such as carrots and squash. Small pieces of fruit such as apple slices or strawberries make a nice treat. Remove fresh foods daily so they don’t spoil. Give your parakeet a cuttlebone to gnaw on. This provides your bird with calcium while keeping his beak trim. Ensure your parakeet has access to fresh, clean water at all times.
