Treating Back Issues in Dogs

Some specific dog breeds are prone to back problems such as Dachshunds, Basset Hounds, Beagles or Shih Tzus. However, all dogs are at some risk. Typical signs of back issues include numbness, difficulty walking, dragging legs, a hunched back or any sign of pain in the back. Seek medical attention if your dog shows any signs of a back issue. Healing is dependent on quick action so follow your vet’s instructions exactly. Conservative measures such as crate rest or steroids can be quite effective in reducing swelling so your dog can heal. Strict crate rest means exactly that. Keep your dog in the crate at all times except when to go outside for urination and defecation. Your vet may suggest physical therapy and water therapy to strengthen the spinal muscles. More severe back issues may need surgical intervention. A bad back is not necessarily a death sentence.
